Miracles in the Quran

The Qur’an on Mountains

The Quran describes mountains as “pegs” that stabilize the Earth’s crust and prevent it from shaking.

Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: Did We not make the earth a resting ground? And the mountains as pegs? [Quran 78 : 6 - 7]

Today, scientists confirm that mountains have deep roots extending into the Earth to stabilize the earth and prevent it from shaking, much like pegs anchoring a tent. The roots of the mountains beneath the surface of the earth are several times deeper than the height of that which appears above the surface. The highest peaks, such as Everest, have roots reaching over 100 km deep, which is unseen to the human eye.

Another verse further emphasizes the stabilizing role of mountains:

And He placed firm mountains in the earth, that it does not shake you... (Qur’an 16:15)

This verse highlights the stabilizing role of mountains, just as pegs hold a tent. This knowledge about the role of mountains as stabilizers for the earth has just begun to be understood in the framework of plate tectonics since the late 1960s. But this fact was mentioned in the Qur’an more than 1400 years ago, long before it was discovered by modern science. However, this is yet another proof that the Qur'an is the word of Allah.
